I get asked about home improvement projects a lot, and the number one area people ask for advice on is…[drumroll]…the fireplace.
The fire place serves as a focal point, and even if it is not functional it warms a space and makes it feel more comfortable. Fireplaces are a unique part of every home, and in that unique quality lies both the fun and the challenge. If your stockings where hung with great care by a less than attractive fireplace, then make 2017 the year to upgrade so that next Christmas you’ll have the kind of fireplace Santa would be impressed to use.
I rounded up 10 great fireplace makeovers that address some of the most common questions I have heard about how to upgrade this important part of the home. There’s a little something here for everyone!
10 Fireplace Makeovers
The number one question I get about updating an old fireplace is “how do I whitewash that brick?!” If red brick isn’t your thing, whitewashing is an easy, attractive solution. Check it out and have that fireplace gussied up in a weekend.
Want to take whitewashing a step farther? Watched Fixer Upper and now your head is buzzing with “German schmear”? This technique involves caking mortar over the brick so that only a little bit of the brick shows through. It’s an old world European look that can look really sharp. (If you want to see more of the technique hop over to Sawdust 2 Stitches and check out Corey’s tutorial on her brick accent wall.)
One of my very favorite projects was our fireplace upgrade. Want to tie some build ins into your fireplace? Does your room need a more dramatic focal point? How about more storage? Here’s how we did it.
If you have tile instead of brick you may be able to simply paint your way to a quick weekend upgrade with a whole lotta wow for the buck.
Sometimes an old fireplace needs to be dressed up, literally. Layla has actually shared a number of fireplace makeovers, everyone of them spot on, but the process essentially comes down to wrapping board around the existing structure. Check it out, and let your mind reel with the possibilities.
Another wrap around. Hopefully now you are starting to get a sense for the different looks that can come from this process, as well as seeing the different techniques each person used to fit their individual circumstances.
Brass fireplace inserts. They are everywhere, and no one likes them. Here’s how to paint away the eyesore and instantly refresh the look of your fireplace.
Vineta had to tear down before she could build up, and the end result is beautiful. If your home has a little more history, you may find yourself excavating the past as well in order to upgrade that fireplace. Embrace the journey!
Now, admittedly, this is not a tutorial. I just fell in love with this fireplace and had to share it. That chevron patterned reclaimed lumber is just to die for, isn’t it? If you like the look of reclaimed wood, consider incorporating it in your design. It makes a gorgeous focal point to any room.
A very simple look at how adding to the height of your fireplace adds style drama to a space without costing a lot or really taking all that much work.
Are you planning a fireplace makeover project in 2017?! Be sure to share how it turns out!
